Star It Forward: How 30 Tiny Acts of Kindness Created a Ripple Effect When we kicked off our very first Star It Forward Challenge, the idea was simple:
Complete 30 tiny acts of kindness in 30 days. We hoped it would brighten someone else’s day. What I didn’t expect (to the extent) was how much it would brighten our own. Throughout the month, our Fitness Inspired Boot Camp community discovered that kindness isn’t just something we do—it’s something that changes our perspective, how we move through our days, and even who we’re choosing to be. More Than a Kindness Challenge One member shared that July had been one of the hardest months mentally and emotionally. Despite everything life was throwing at her, she said FI Boot Camp became her “set point”—a place she knew she could always come back to. She noticed she was fueling her body better, sleeping better, drinking more water, continuing to lose weight, and doing movements she never imagined she could do. But one of her favorite takeaways wasn’t physical at all. She began intentionally looking for opportunities to perform small acts of kindness everywhere she went. Her words summed it up perfectly: “It just feels good to do good.” Kindness Is a Practice Another participant realized that kindness comes in different forms. Some acts are intentional and can be planned—writing appreciation notes, leaving encouraging sticky notes, and sending a thoughtful text. Others require paying attention to opportunities: Picking up litter. Giving a sincere compliment. Leaving a positive review. Helping without being asked. Once she upped her game looking for opportunities, they seemed to appear where ever she looked! That awareness spilled into other healthy habits too. She began taking more stretching breaks during the day, practicing longer exhales, checking in with her body, looking up during walks, pairing gratitude with her morning coffee, and using breathwork to fall asleep at night. One tiny intentional choice often leads to another. The Ripple Effect Another great story comes from a member working in a short-staffed environment. Instead of focusing on everything she couldn’t do, she focused on what she could. She cleaned and organized workspaces so coworkers could focus on urgent tasks. She surprised people with coffee, tea, and healthy snacks. Small gestures. Big impact. She chose to make the bed before leaving for work because she knew her husband had a difficult day. He never got to enjoy it after work the way she imagined—but he still noticed. He still appreciated it. Kindness doesn’t have to be dramatic. Sometimes it’s simply letting someone know they’re seen. Skeptical at First… One participant admitted something we appreciated hearing: At first, the challenge felt a little superficial. But once they started practicing it, everything changed. They saw the genuine impact tiny moments could have on other people. Building Momentum Together One thing that made this challenge especially successful was keeping it simple. During stretching and cooling down in each FI Boot Camp workout, I spent a minute or two inviting everyone to complete three tiny acts of kindness before the next class. I had hoped inviting 3 repetition to 3 people (or groups) our chosen tiny act of kindness, made it feel approachable instead of overwhelming. I was so impressed at how our Fitness Inspired Boot Campers ROCKED getting the reps in! Our kindness muscles grew stronger this month :) Coworkers were included. Waitresses. Neighbors. Cashiers. Healthcare workers. Family members. Complete strangers. The kindness ripple effect worked & feels so great! A Favorite Takeaway As I prepared this challenge, something unexpected happened to me too. I was feeling stressed about life and all the things on my own plate. But as I brainstormed creative ways to “Star It Forward,” my attention shifted away from my worries and toward possibility. Thinking about how to brighten someone else’s day ended up brightening mine. I want to remember to teach and practice this whenever I might feel weighed down by my own stuff. What a super power we all are capable of doing! Looking Ahead This was our very first Star It Forward Challenge, and it definitely won’t be our last. We’ve already collected some great ideas for next time, including:
Thank you for sharing your stories. Thank you for reminding us that changing the world doesn’t always require big gestures. Sometimes it starts with a compliment. A cup of coffee. A cleaned workspace. A made bed. Or simply choosing to notice someone who needs a little encouragement. Thirty tiny acts of kindness became something much bigger than a challenge. It became a reminder that we all have the ability to make someone’s day—and in the process, transform our own too. Excited to keep the Star it Forward tiny acts of kindness going with you and watching it continue to grow!
