Igniting Healthy Triggers

4/16/2018

Most of us have routines. Every day we wake up, brush our teeth, get ready for work, drive to work, I could keep on going but you get the picture. We don't even think about many of these activities because they are so ingrained in our routines and habits. Why not add a shot of health to that routine?!

At Fitness Inspired we have identified some common activities that can act as a trigger to a healthy behavior. Check out the list below for some healthy combos that you can add to your day to help you live a healthier life without any extra effort once the habit and trigger are successfully paired!
Here's my challenge for you, pick ONE from this list you think seems enjoyable and you would like to do more of.  For example, I would like to stretch more so I am making a commitment that I will NOT make a cup of coffee for myself without stretching.  Turning on the Keurig is my trigger, hitting "brew" is my trigger to stretch.

  1. Stretch while making coffee
  2. Plank during commercials whenever you watch TV
  3. Get outside every lunch break
  4. Affirmations and Mantra while putting on deodorant
  5. Turn your shower into a spa
  6. Set your alarm for a time that you can't afford to hit snooze
  7. Write 3 things you're thankful for each night in Gratitude journal as soon as you climb into bed
  8. Posture exercises every time you are in car
  9. Walk around when talking on the phone
  10. Make your bed immediately when you get up
  11. Every time you get home immediately hang jacket up, put your bag away, process any papers/mail
  12. Wall sit while brushing your teeth

These are just some healthy triggers that we are using in our everyday lives! We would love to add more to our repertoire so comment below and share with us your ideas of healthy triggers(:

Also, it is so important you are committed that EVERY time you do the trigger you MUST do the healthy behavior you are practicing, so you can experience the benefits of the behavior turning into a habit! There are so many days that my little ones are tugging or crying for me, but I include them in my process of my coffee/stretching habit pairing. You can do this too!
